Then David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privily. And it came to pass afterward, that David’s heart smote him because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.

Scripture Commentaries
King Saul was a man of aggression. He sought after David, unjustifiably.
He wanted David dead at all cost, 1 Sam 18:11.
By God's providence, Saul was weak and he and his men slept in a cave.
David's men informed him of the opportunity to kill Saul.
David however chose to quietly cut a part of Saul's robe. It was to show the king that he, David, had the opportunity to kill him, but he chose not to.
After David did this, his heart smote him "...because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.”
David knew he had done wrong.
He set a tone on the kind of attitude and heart we all should strive to have.
David saw an opportunity to get even with Saul who wanted him destroyed but he carefully chose humanity over aggression.
How do you feel when you have done wrong?
More so, save a life instead of destroying one.
Choose humanity over aggression.
Remorse corner
A true child of God will not be able to sin without feeling some guilt about it.
David could not get away with his disrespect toward Saul.
Call to Word action
The Church and social media are full of hateful comments and acts of rebellion towards God's leaders yet there is no feeling of regret or remorse.

The more you allow sin to occur without repentance, the harder your heart becomes.
Prayer
Lord, may my heart be sensitive to the Spirit of God. When l sin, may my heart smite me unto repentance, in Jesus name.
