Esther 3:8-9 And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of thy kingdom; and their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep they the king's laws: therefore it is not for the king's profit to suffer them.
If it pleases the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king's treasuries.
Insight and Highlight
Envy is the foundation of many evil, along with it are confusion and disorderliness. Esther 3:15 says ".....the city Shushan was perplexed.
Scripture Commentaries
Esther 3:15 tells us that, after Haman's evil desire was granted by king Ahasuerus, the city of Shushan was thrown into confusion.
It all started with envy. Haman's hateful comment on Mordecai sums it all. In Esther 5:13, he said Yet all this availeth me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate.
His hatred goes beyond this.
He also harbored resentment out of envy for the Jewish people because they were many. According to his word in Esther 3: 8 he reported to the king saying the Jewish people were "...scattered abroad and dispersed among the people..."
The same words were spoken by the new king of Egypt who knew not Joseph in Exd 1:8-14. So also did king Balak of Moab in Numb 22:11.
Clearly, Haman, the new king of Egypt, and Balak were envious of the Jewish people.
Envy carries a lot of vices with it.
You do not have to be rich to be envied. People can envy you for a distinct quality you have that they do not have.
May God deliver you from envious people.
Remorse corner
When you are envious, you are in the worst possible position you can be in. You will even envy sinners, ref Ps 73:3.
Call to Word action
Proverbs 23:17-18 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
For surely there is an end, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
The Christian clarion duty
When you are envious, you will destroy more than you can make good.
Prayer
Prov 15:16 Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith.
