1 Kgs 2:8-9 *And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.*
*Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.*

*Scripture Commentaries.*
In life, watch your step and tread carefully. There is no sin without its consequences.
Shimei cursed David while he was fleeing from Absalom. He was from the house of Saul, 2 Sam 16:5-8.
David had sworn by an oath to him that he would not put him to death, 2 Sam 19:23. However, on David's death bed, he handed down a willingness to have Shimei killed, 1Kgs 2:8-9.
Just before David told Solomon about Shimei, he left the killing of Shimei at Solomon's discretion, 1 Kgs 2:6.
Solomon acted at his discretion by restricting Shimei's movement, but after 3 three years, Shimei violated the restrictions, and Solomon ordered his death, 1 Kgs 1:46.
It is not so clear why Solomon gave Shimei such uneding restrictions of house arrest. It may be just as good as any reason for keeping a suspected threat incarcerated so that he would not be a national threat.
It was a restriction that did not look like one that would be kept forever .
Shimei, for whatever reason, swore an oath he would abide with Solomon's word, which was the word of the Lord, 1 Kgs 2:42-43.
Shimei defaulted on the oath and so must die.
People's own faults often overtake them to undo themselves no matter how they try. They are often taken captives by their sins.
Shimei did not have to go where he went. He could have sent someone else. His ego, as a master of slaves, destroyed him. He should have at least remembered an oath and discretion that had saved his life until now.
We must be careful of the forces that ensnare us, forces that hold us to do wrong compulsively.
It is good that our sins are not remembered again, Heb 10:17.
Watch your steps, and act carefully . There is no sin without consequences. If not now, it may be later.
May we not be ensnared by sin.
