SHOULD CHRISTIANS DRINK ALCOHOL? Proverbs 20:1

Introduction

Today we will look at Proverbs's admonition on strong drinks. May we be blessed in Jesus' name.

1). Wine is a mocker (Prov 20:1a)

This verse strongly warns about inherent dangers often associated with drinking alcohol. As a “mocker” it leads to a decreased capacity for self-control, prudent behavior, and righteous values are eliminated Gen 9:21, Hosea 7:5, 1 Sam 25:36-37, Isaiah 28:7, 49:26. Whosoever is deceived is not wise Prov 21:1c.

2). *“…..strong drink is raging (Prov 20:1b)

As “raging” it contributes to disturbances, conflicts, and violence in families and society Prov 4:17; 23:29-30, Hosea 4:11.

3). ...Whosoever is deceived is not wise (Prov 21:1c)

Alcohol is associated with inefficiency Prov 21:27, poverty Prov 23:20-21, 29 – 35, injustice 31:4-5. Paul’s admonitions should not be interpreted in the context of alcohol Eph 5:18, I Tim 3:3,8, 5:23. Jesus in Cana should also be read and understood in the context that Jesus will never be part of any riotous or alcoholic induced gathering John 2:10. Rulers are advised not to drink alcohol since it can affect their decisions 31:4-9.

CORRECTIVE OBSERVATIONS ON BIBLICAL REFERENCES TO WINE

Apostle Paul’s admonitions should not be interpreted in the context of alcohol, Eph 5:18

1 Tim 3:3, 8. 1 Tim 5:23.

To understand this verse better, we must take notice of what Paul said "keep yourself pure" in 1 Tim 5:22b

Jesus in Cana should also be read and understood in the context that Jesus will never be part of a riotous or alcoholic-induced gathering, John 2:10.

Rulers are advised not to drink alcohol since it can affect their decisions, Prov 31:4-9.

SHOULD CHRISTIANS DRINK ALCOHOL?

People do not associate beer with Christian character or good behavior.

Bible strongly discourages Christian from indulging in alcohol, Rom 14:21.

The destructive influence of alcohol will not make you Christlike or a faithful witness after the manner of Christlikeness.

God has made us Kings and Priests. God warns kings and Priest not to drink. He will not want them to drink alcohol,

Revelations 1:5-6, Ezk 44:21

Isaiah 28:7-11, Prov 31:3-8.

The scriptures clearly warn about the destructive and addictive nature of alcohol.

We read in earlier from, Prov 20:1, Prov 21:17, Prov 23:29-35,

Eph 5:18.

Scripture further says and is very clear that drunkenness is always wrong, Rom 13:13-14

Gal 5:19-21, 1 Peter 4:2- 3.

Hab 2:15, 1 Cor 5:11.

Conclusion

Statistics show alcohol is responsible for 50% of fatal crashes, 75% of all crimes committed, and more than 30% of all murders. It is a strong factor in sexual immorality, pregnancy outside marriage, and high divorce rates. Only by following God’s word can we avert this menace. Abstinence is strongly recommended from alcohol.

May God help us in Jesus' name. God bless you.
