GUARD AGAINST UNGUARDED UTTERANCES

James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

Insight and Highlight

Matt 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Scripture Commentaries

The tongue when it is loosed and uncontrolled will burn and destroy the fairest works of peace.

The Apostle James compared an uncontrolled tongue as the same as hell: a place of torment, the accursed side of Hades.

The closest and most perfect illustration of how the tongue is set on "fire of hell" is shown in the story of the rich man and Lazarus when the rich man of the parable prayed for water to cool his tongue (Luke 16:24).

The "hot-tempered" folk will smite with the tongue, the malicious will, as a gratification of spite or as revenge for wrong, smite with the tongue.

James says men have tamed animals but have woefully failed taming their tongues, James 3: 7-8.

Lord, let the words of my mouth be as deep waters, a wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook, in Jesus' name.
