.....BY MYSELF HAVE I SWORN.....(2)
*WISDOM FOR TODAY*
*.....BY MYSELF HAVE I SWORN...."(2)*
*Genesis 22:16 *And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:*
*Insight and Highlight.*
God was telling Abraham that there was none greater than Himself.
*Scripture Commentaries.*
God was telling Abraham that there was none greater than Himself.
When people swear, they do so swearing by something or someone greater than themselves.
Heb 6:16 says, *"People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument."*
This is common with oath taken at any court of law.
However, no one swears by themselves. They swear in the name of the one they are swearing.
When Jacob swore, he swore by someone greater than himself. Gen 31:53 says *The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob swore by the fear of his father, Isaac.*
However, when God swore to Abraham, He told Him He swore by Himself.
Heb 6:13 *For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,*
God may have stopped men from swearing.
Matt 5:34-37 *But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:*
*Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.*
*Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.*
*But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.*
A reason why Christ might have said this is because people still lie after oath.
This is why He said that anyone who swears by any way in addition to Jerusalem or by his head is under the inspiration of Satan, the evil one
Christ says in Matt 5:37b that *'.......anything more than that comes from the evil one.*
In God's Kingdom, no other form of swearing is required from any Christian in their relationship with God and man.
So the only acceptable form of swearing is in God's sworn oath to Abraham, and none will ever be second to it.
Second, God swore to Abraham because He can not deny Himself.
By this, God was telling Him that He would not need anybody to help Him fulfill the promise He had made to Abraham.
People who swear by someone greater than themselves are saying they will achieve what they swore to do through the help of the person in whose name they are swearing.
This is why we hear 'so help me God' at the end of the oath of office sworn in the name of God when people swear by the Bible.
When your yes is yes and your no is no you are just as in the likeness of God saying to Abraham, l am what l say.
*Remorse corner.*
When God promises you, He has sworn by Himself saying He does not need anyone to help Him fulfill His promises for you.
*Call to Word action.*
Instead of swearing, do or say what you say you would do! Do not do or say what you would not do!
Matt 5: 37b *But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay:...*
*The Christian clarion duty.*
When God promises you, He is swearing by Himself, saying He does not need anyone to help Him to do what He wants to do for you.
When you swear by any other, God is saying you do not need to do so. By Christ's word, no form of swearing moves God.
*Prayer.*
Lord, help me to trust that there is none greater than You, in Jesus name.
Good morning all and have a blessed day today.
God bless you.
